Biodigester is a system where anaerobic digestion of biodegradable materials takes place. Anaerobic digestion is a process of reducing biodegradable materials by microorganisms in absence of oxygen into biogas and bioslurry as end products. JUAS biodigester is a type of biodigester designed to recycle food/kitchen wastes into biogas and fertilizer at source. Biogas from JUAS biodigester can be used for cooking with biogas stove and liquid fertilizer (bioslurry) as another byproduct can be used for farming.

No, biogas requires low pressure stoves or modified LPG stoves suited for biogas.

LPG is highly compressed gas in a liquid form done mainly for easier transportation so, when flame gets into the LPG cylinder it will explode. Biogas in JUAS biodigester is collected at low pressure in a floating drum that can never explode.

Rural based gobar gas plants are designed to process animal manures along with human excrements. JUAS biodigester is designed to effectively manage food wastes. Since food wastes are undigested high calorie wastes compared to manures so, biogas production from JUAS biodigester is much higher in quantity, making it at least 20 times more efficient than traditional gobar gas plant. Also our biodigester is semi-portable and can be installed on rooftops or basement occupying small space.

Composting is an aerobic process and is much labor intensive than anaerobic digestion. Byproducts of composting is compost only whereas byproducts of anaerobic digestion are biogas and liquid fertilizer. Unlike composting, biodigester also accepts putrefactive wastes such as meat, milk, oily foods, etc. Most of the plant nutrients when doing traditional composting are lost to atmosphere and ground water, but in bioslurry plant nutrients are usually fully contained.

Gharelu (Homescale) biodigester can be installed within 3 hours depending on location. Gas production will start within 2 to 4 weeks depending on weather and temperature.

Plastics, glass, chemicals and any other non-biodegradable materials should never be fed. Care should be given not to feed too much of anti-microbial substances such as medicines, lemon, garlic, onion, spices, etc. Small amount will not harm. Also, do not feed too much of high calorie wastes  at once such as sugar, sweets, chocolates, fats, oils, etc. Too much carbs and fats will turn bio-digester acidic and methane production will stop resulting in biogas with high carbon-dioxide content which will not burn. So, well balanced feed should be maintained for optimum efficiency. Also, try to avoid materials like paper, egg shells, bones, wood or dry leaves as these materials will take long time to decay.

No. For a Gharelu  biodigester (1 cubic meter) daily up to 2kg of feeding is recommended. Feeding lesser amount or no feeding at all for few days is also totally fine. Feeding more than 2kg per day once or twice a month, usually during party or get together, is also acceptable. But feeding beyond 3kg on a regularly basis will overload the digester and gas production will stop.

Well maintained digester is order less including the bioslurry. Overloaded/overfed biodigester will be smelly. Biogas when leaked will give pungent smell like that of a rotten egg. Gas while burning will not smell.

If the digester is operated properly and intelligently then it never requires any heavy maintenance. For a Gharelu biodigester, once a year about 200 liters of sludge should be released from bottom sludge outlet and moisture trap should be replaced.

JUAS vertical planter is a PVC pipe modified soil-less vertical farming system designed to grow greens and vegetables on non-arable land such as rooftops and balconies. Growing medium used in this planter is a mixture of coconut coir, rice husks and compost. JUAS vertical planter is designed to utilize bioslurry as a fertilizer to grow organic foods.

In majority of rooftop gardens in Nepal, containers are used which occupy lots of space and soil used in it increases overall load to the structure of the house. JUAS vertical planter uses coco coir and perlite mix which is 5 times lighter than soil and also retains more water and oxygen than average type of soil. Since JUAS vertical planter also has water reservoir at the bottom which wicks water upward in the pipe so, daily watering is also not required ultimately saving time and labor.

With proper maintenance and fertilization, each JUAS vertical planter per year can give anywhere from 20 to 30kgs of greens such as spinach, cilantro, kale, mustard greens, pak choi, celery, swiss chard, etc. Vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumber, cabbage, egg plant, etc. can also be easily grown with proper support and frames.

Any crops are prone to pest. We do not recommend using chemical pesticides for farming as these chemicals disrupt microbial activity which is very essential for organic food production. Please use greenhouse if your location is prone to pest and use various IPM (Integrated pest management) principles found in internet to produce organic foods.

Yes, integrated with JUAS biodigester, JUAS vertical planters can be cost effectively used for commercial organic farming right next to your market, that is, cities. To make it less labor and water intensive, automatic drip irrigation can be used.
